Mar 04, 2009  The iPhone Amazon Kindle app is available now. I just tried it out. I downloaded the book I'm currently reading on my Kindle 2 and it syncs to the last page I read. I don't know that I would want to read on the iPhone screen all the time but it will be great to read a few pages when I get a chance.

Several users, who were planning to buy an iPad, asked us for tips to export ebooks from the Kindle. They imagined they would need to back up their books, imports them, and maybe – somewhere in the meantime – convert them to a different format.

There is no need to export or back up the files. There is no need to use file converters. The only thing to do to get Kindle books to your new device is download the free Kindle app.

What if most of your ebooks were downloaded for free from the sites that offer free public domain ebooks? You don’t need the Kindle app to be able to read them. You can pick up any other app that supports the same file formats as the Kindle – mobi or prc.

The problem begins the moment you want to read books you’ve bought in the Kindle Store. You will need to remove DRM. For most users, it’s a painful and frustrating process. Why do that, if you can manage all the books you’ve previously used on the Kindle, with the dedicated, feature-rich Kindle app?

Benefits of using Kindle apps

  • All your books are synced. No matter which device you open the book in, you will land exactly at the place where you have finished reading it.
  • There is no need to transfer files every time you change the device. All you have to do is download the Kindle app and sign in using the same Amazon credentials.
  • You can access your Kindle books even if you don’t have access to your own device. Thanks to a web app, you can login to your Kindle library using the web browser. Try read.amazon.com.
  • You have easy access to all your notes and bookmarks. You can do it from any computer by visiting read.amazon.com/notebook.

If you would like to back up all your Kindle books to your computer, that’s a different story. You can do that, and here is the guide.

Both Kindle and iPad are equally helpful for reading ebooks. Everything depends on what, when, and how you want to read.

Free Kindle apps to download

1. Kindle for Android

The default book-reading app of the Android system is Google Play Books. Why should you download another app? It’s because Google’s book app can’t read your Kindle books. Well, it may – after you go through the painful process of stripping DRM and converting the Kindle file to the format supported by Google app.

It’s much easier to download the Kindle app from Google Play Store and sign in with your Amazon credentials. Once you do it, you will find your Kindle books under “All” tab – simple as that.

Amazon Kindle is one of the most advanced book-reading apps in the Google Play Store. It offers features you may have known from Amazon Fire or Kindle: built-in dictionary, Google search, Wikipedia, or instant translations. You will make use of X-Ray, Page Flip, or advanced library management.

The app seamlessly connects with the Kindle Store. You can download free samples or buy books right within the app. You can also download and manage free ebooks. They come from three sources:

  • Kindle Store – thousands of classic books from the public domain – however, the selection is not that large as on Project Gutenberg.
  • Library books – borrow ebooks from your local library and they will be delivered wirelessly to your Kindle account.
  • Free ebooks via your Amazon membership – if you are subscribed to Kindle Unlimited or Amazon Prime, you can access and download eligible books for free.

The Kindle app lets you read Print Replica textbooks. These special Kindle books offer rich formatting and layout similar to their related print editions. They also provide features to help you study smarter and quicker – you can highlight passages, add margin notes, search for keywords, etc.

One of the best features the Android Kindle app offers is Whispersync for Voice. This advanced technology lets you seamlessly switch between reading a Kindle ebook and listening to its audiobook companion.

2. Kindle for iPad and iPhone

Do you ask yourself a question “Can I read my Kindle books on the iPad or iPhone?”

The answer is, certainly, “yes.” Download the free Kindle app from the App Store and sign in with the credentials you use for your Kindle e-reader or Amazon Fire tablet.

Congratulations! You’ve just brought all your Kindle books to the iPad! The books are available in the Kindle app home view, under “All” tab. Tap the book you want to read, and the download will start automatically.

Since late 2017, Kindle apps for Android and iOS offer unified interface and features. You will appreciate it when you decide to switch from Android-powered device to iOS – or the other way round. When you start using the new device, you will be happy to see the familiar Kindle environment and the similar bunch of benefits.

However, compared to the Android app, Kindle for iOS lacks one major feature: you can’t buy books inside the app. It’s due to Apple’s restrictive policy, which made Amazon delete an in-app purchase option long time ago. Within the app, you will be only able to download free samples or access free books from Kindle Unlimited or Amazon Prime Reading.

Kindle for Samsung is in fact Kindle for Android stripped from a few advanced features. However, it offers one big benefit – a monthly deal. Each month, four new books are offered. You can download one of them free of charge. In other words, using Kindle for Samsung will help you get 12 free Kindle books every year.

What you have to keep in mind is that Kindle for Samsung is different from Kindle for Android. The latter one is available in the Google Play Store on your Samsung device – but it doesn’t offer one free book per month.

You have to download Kindle for Samsung separately and use your Samsung login to activate it. The app, just like others made for Samsung, can be installed via Galaxy Apps widget that you have to download and install on your Samsung Galaxy’s home screen.

Kindle App Highlight

A treat for all bibliophiles out there! Amazon's Kindle app for Android and iOS is out with a brand new look and it's stunning. The new app is inspired by books of course and it also incorporates few important features from the Kindle e-reader.

Sporting a major redesign, the new Kindle app comes with a bunch of new features that enhance reading experience on mobile devices. The user interface (UI) is simple and free of all distractions that lead to seamless reading as it should be with the world's favorite eBook reader.

So without further ado, let’s check out the top new features of the updated Kindle app.

1. Revamped User Interface

First up, Amazon has reworked the old Kindle app icon that featured a kid reading under a tree. The new logo features only the silhouette of the kid while the product title – kindle – and the tree have been removed.

The refreshed Kindle app user interface sports a cleaner and more streamlined look.

The new, user-friendly design makes it easier to navigate through the app. Book covers have been made larger that helps you to browse easily. Another welcome change is the inclusion of Amazon’s custom Bookerly font for book titles.

Kindle Ios App Highlights Don't Match Kindle Macbook Pro

I also noticed small tweaks here and there such as the ability to display the current time on the page while you're reading. You can even choose left alignment instead of auto in the Displaysetting.

The Kindle app lets you read eBooks and magazines on any device, including iPhone, iPad, Android, and PCs.

2. Light and Dark Themes

The update comes with two new themes - dark and light. As the names suggest, the former changes the app background to black while the latter changes it to white. It must be noted that the theme change only applies to the app and, once you open a book, you will still see a white background to offer you a relaxed reading experience.

I personally prefer the light theme as it's more comforting for the eyes, especially if you're reading for a long time. You can choose between the themes from Settings.

Word of advice: Don't forget to enable the blue-light filter on your device to protect your eyes.

3. New Bottom Navigation Bar

There is a new navigation bar at the bottom of the app comprising a button that allows you to quickly return to your current book. The one-tap access feature automatically shows an icon of the book you're currently reading.

The navigation bar follows you around so you can quickly return to the book you're currently reading from anywhere in the app. I loved this feature as it helped me get back to the book in no time. Buttons for Home, Library, Store, and More are present on the navigation bar.

Android users can continue to buy books directly from the Kindle app on their phone. Unfortunately, iPhone owners still won’t be able to buy Kindle books directly through the app.

4. Inclusion of a Search Bar

A new search bar has been placed at the top of the revamped Kindle app. This can be accessed from anywhere in the app.

You can instantly search for downloaded books, as well as books in the store, using the search bar.

5. Goodreads Integration

Amazon is focusing more on social features of the Kindle app by integrating Goodreads with the new update. The iOS version now gets a new Community tab that allows users to see what their friends or other users they follow are reading. This cool feature also lets you share reviews and post comments on Goodreads.

In case you see books you would like to read, you can add them to your 'Want to Read' list for easy reference.

The feature will let you highlight portions of a book you are reading and directly share it on Goodreads. The app will recommend fellow Goodreads users, who have similar taste and interests, to you so that you can follow them. These suggestions may include authors and popular Goodreads reviewers.

Unfortunately, only iPhone and iPad users can enjoy the Goodreads integration via the Kindle app on iOS. Hopefully, it will soon be expanded to the Android app as well.

I'm really looking forward to checking out the Goodreads integration on Android. Being a Goodreads user, it'll be a nice to see the service within the Kindle app, which will save the hassle of visiting the site separately.

6. Read More with Word Wise

The update is adding a popular Kindle feature, called Word Wise, to the app. It makes it easier for readers to understand challenging books more quickly. The feature shows you short and simple definitions of difficult words and phrases.

A toggle button is available for Word Wise in Settings. You can enable/disable it anytime and also choose if you want fewer or more hints while reading. I believe this feature will be helpful for many users, especially children trying to improve their reading skills.

Note: Word Wise works best with a strong Wi-Fi connection. It failed to work for me on mobile data.

7. Do More with Dictionary

You can look for the meaning of words using the built-in dictionary. In order to get this feature, you will have to download the Dictionary first. After you've installed it, long-press on a word and a box will appear with the meaning of the word. You can click on the dictionary and get the full definition of the word.

It also offers Wikipedia and Translate options and for more information if you just swipe right.

8. Know Your Book

The app adds a new About This Book section that helps you learn more about the book you're currently reading. You'll have to tap the hamburger menu (three horizontal lines) in the top-left corner. This will present a menu with several tabs, including About This Book.

This feature offers additional information about the author as well. It also includes popular highlights from fellow Kindle users.

I found this small addition quite useful as you get more information about the author and the book before you actually start reading it.

Put Your Reading Glasses on!

It's time to get comfy and enjoy your favorite book with the newly updated Kindle app. These new features will surely assist you to reach your reading goals. Do you read ebooks on your smartphone or do you prefer a Kindle? Let us know.
