Apple Announces New iPad Air, Updated iPad Mini, Macs

This Tuesday, Apple had many exciting announcements. We'll start with the star attraction, the iPad Air - the 5th generation iPad. This iPad is the first major redesign since Steve Jobs announced the iPad 2 in 2011. It has the same 9.7-inch screen, but a thinner bezel, so the iPad is thinner overall. It is thinner as well, and it also weighs nearly half as much as the previous generation, at exactly one pound, hence 'Air.'

Overall, the exterior of the iPad Air borrow elements from its cousin, the iPad mini. As far as the inside, it has the same 64-bit A7 processor as the iPhone 5S, introduced last month. Having a 64-bit processor opens up so many possibilities for intensive, sophisticated apps. Speaking of the iPad mini, the 2nd generation iPad mini was also announced. This iPad now has a Retina display - 2048x1536 resolution, a huge step up from the previous generation. The difference is quite noticeable, as you know if you have upgraded from an iPad 2 to a 3rd or 4th generation iPad.

Onto the lineup, pricing, and availability. The 1st generation iPad mini will still be sold at $299, down from $329. The 2nd generation iPad mini will be $399. With $399, you can also buy an iPad 2, an older version of the larger, 9.7-inch iPad (with no Retina display). The all-new, redesigned, ultra-thin iPad Air starts at $499, the same is the 4th generation iPad it replaces. The iPad Air will be available November 1st. The iPad mini with Retina display will be available later in November.

According to Apple's website, the iPad mini with Retina display is now available in a 128GB version to accompany the 16GB, 32GB and 64GB models. The larger iPad was available in a 128GB version as of this past January. In June 2012, Apple introduced the Smart Case, which was similar to the Smart Cover introduced along side the iPad 2 a year prior, except it covered the whole iPad instead of just the screen. However, when the iPad mini was announced, there was a Smart Cover made for it, but no Smart Case. Now both size iPads have both Smart Covers and Smart Cases, available in the same colors as the iPhone 5S cases announced last month. The Smart Cover you have for your current iPad will not work well with the thinner iPad Air. The iPad Air and mini Smart Cover is $39. The iPad mini Smart Case is $69, and the one for the iPad Air is $79. They come in blue, yellow (for the first time), black, red, pink (a hotter pink than before), and green (a darker green than before). The classic Smart Cover and Case are still available in case you wanted to buy one of them along with an iPad 2, at $39 for the Coevr and $49 for the Case. See here for cover/case information.

The iPad Air is not the only thinner device announced today. The MacBook Pro with Retina display now has a thinner design as well. In addition, it has many internal improvements to bring it up to speed with the MacBook Air which got upgraded in June. The MacBook Pro with Retina display now has the 4th generation Intel Core processor (Haswell), and its graphics companion (Iris), boosting it to 9 hours of battery life. It also has the 802.11ac Wi-Fi standard - a nice Internet speed improvement. It also got a $200 price cut. The 13-inch now starts at $1299 and the 15-inch starts at $1999. The regular MacBook Pro, with the CD drive, FireWire and Ethernet ports, but no Retina display, has been phased out of the lineup, leaving just the MacBook Pro with Retina display, and the MacBook Air.

All Macs are powered by OS X, the world's most advanced, intuitive and visually appealing operating system. In June, Apple previewed OS X Mavericks (OS X 10.9), the tenth major release of OS X. Today, Apple software chief Craig Federighi touched base on OS X Mavericks, which introduces many power-saving technologies, new applications like iBooks and Maps (previously seen on iOS), and more. Furthermore, he announced that OS X Mavericks will be available today.

Recent OS X releases have costed $20-$30, and prior to that it was a three-digit number. Today, however, for the first time ever, Apple released a major new OS X version for $0. Yes, absolutely free. It gets even better. Users can update to Mavericks from any OS back to Snow Leopard (Mac OS X 10.6), and Mavericks is compatible with the same Macs that its predecessor, OS X Mountain Lion, was. Mavericks can be downloaded from the Mac App Store, just like the previous two OS X iterations.

Lastly, Apple also announced some major tweaks to its iWork (Keynote, Numbers and Pages) productivity application suite, and iLife (iPhoto, iMovie, and Garageband). The iOS version of the apps are getting an iOS 7 makeover. There are also a few new features, too, such as the ability to share and collaborate with others on your documents. The iLife suite has some new features as well, such as the drummer feature, borrowed from Apple's Logic Pro X application.
